US suspends some aid programmes for Niger due to coup d'état

The United States is pausing certain foreign assistance programs benefiting the government of Niger.

This was reported by the US Department of State.

"As we have made clear since the outset of this situation, the provision of U.S. assistance to the government of Niger depends on democratic governance and respect for constitutional order. This is consistent with steps taken by ECOWAS and the African Union. The U.S. government will continue to review our foreign assistance and cooperation as the situation on the ground evolves consistent with our policy objectives and legal restrictions," the statement reads.

On July 26, a group of military officers led by Presidential Guard Commander Omar Tchiani removed the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum from power.

Although the president is in captivity, he wrote an article for The Washington Post. In it, he referred to the "brutal terrorism" of the Wagner PMC in Ukraine and the threat the group poses to Africa.

The Economic Community of West African States imposed sanctions on Niger and developed a plan for armed intervention in the country to restore constitutional order.
