The South African government asks the court to issue a warrant for Putin's arrest

Despite President Ramaphosa's statements, the South African State Prosecutor's Office has received an official request from the Ministry of Justice to arrest Putin.

The South African opposition party Democratic Alliance announced this.

“Thanks to the DA’s sustained political and legal pressure to ensure compliance with our country’s international obligations, the government on 17 July 2023 formally initiated the process to arrest Vladimir Putin should he set foot on our soil," the statement said.

The BRICS summit will be held in South Africa in August 2023. On July 19, it became known that Foreign Minister Lavrov would attend the summit instead of Putin.

It will be recalled that earlier, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said that the arrest of the Russian president, if he attends the BRICS summit, would mean a declaration of war against Russia.
