Latvia to hand over confiscated cars with Russian licence plates to Ukraine

The Latvian Saeima has supported amendments to the Road Traffic Act in the first reading to comply with EU sanctions.

The Saeima of Latvia reports.

Car owners have three months to re-register or take out of Latvia cars currently registered in Russia.

If drivers fail to do so, the cars will be confiscated. The only exception is cars belonging to diplomatic missions and consulates.

The government also plans to introduce fines of one hundred and fifty to four hundred euros for the unauthorised use of Russian vehicles that are not registered in Latvia.

The final decision on the Act is to be taken by the Saeima in the second reading.

It will be recalled that Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Norway and Bulgaria have also banned cars with Russian licence plates.
