Frederik X, son of Queen Margrethe II, becomes the new King of Denmark

Margrethe II has signed a document abdicating the throne, and her 55-year-old son Frederik X automatically becomes king.

The BBC reports.

Frederick addressed his first speech to the nation: "My hope is to become a unifying king of tomorrow. It's a task I've approached all my life. It's a task I've taken on with pride, respect and joy."

Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen proclaimed Frederik X King from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace.

The King and Queen of the United Kingdom sent their "best wishes" to the new Danish monarch, King Frederik X.

Thousands of people gathered on the streets of Copenhagen to say goodbye to Margrethe II. Buses from all over the country arrived in the capital, as well as visitors from all over the world.

Prince Christian, the eldest son of King Frederik and Queen Mary, has been declared heir to the throne. He is 18 years old.

It will be recalled that on January 1, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announced in her New Year's address that she was abdicating. The Queen became the first Danish monarch to abdicate in almost 900 years.

"I decided that now is the best time. On January 14, 2024, 52 years after I replaced my beloved father, I will step down as Queen of Denmark," the queen said.
