Queen Margrethe II of Denmark abdicates

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has announced in her New Year's address that she is abdicating.
TV2 reports.
The 83-year-old queen will hand over the throne to her son Crown Prince Frederik.
"I decided that now is the best time. On January 14, 2024, 52 years after I replaced my beloved father, I will step down as Queen of Denmark," the queen said.
In 2023, the Queen underwent back surgery.
Margrethe II ascended the throne on January 14, 1972, after her father King Frederik IX died. At the time of her coronation, she was 31 years old. She is currently the last female monarch in the world.
