Zambia reacted to the death of its citizen in Ukraine after his recruitment by the Russian Federation

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Zambia has requested Moscow to provide information about how "a Zambian citizen, serving a prison sentence in Moscow, could have been recruited to fight in Ukraine and subsequently lose his life."

Lemekhani Nathan Nyirenda, 23, was serving a nine-year prison sentence in Russia after being convicted of drug possession in 2020.

The Ministry notes that before his imprisonment, Nyirenda was studying nuclear engineering at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute.
