Ukrainian intelligence: So-called 'Transnistrian Moldovan Republic' will not ask to join Russia
Kyiv, Ukraine, (Svidomi) — Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate has stated that the so-called "Transnistrian Moldovan Republic" will not ask to join Russia during a congress of "deputies of all levels" on February 28.
On February 22, the Moldovan media outlet Moldova Liberă stated, citing "Transnistrian politician" Gennady Chorba, that "deputies" "on behalf of the citizens of Transnistria" would ask to "annexe" the region to Russia at the congress on February 28.
The DIU said that disseminating such a message is a disinformation campaign aimed at destabilising the situation in the region.
Transnistria is an administrative unit within Moldova that has the status of autonomy. In 1990, the territory declared sovereignty, leading to an armed conflict between Moldova and the breakaway republic. In 1992, the fighting ended. Subsequently, a contingent of "Russian peacekeeping forces" was deployed to the region.
The situation in the region has not yet been resolved. In 2022, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe unanimously recognised Transnistria as a Russian-occupied territory.
