The Verkhovna Rada supports the draft law on the selection of judges to the CCU

The Parliament has approved in the second reading the draft law No. 9322 on the competitive selection of candidates for the position of a judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.

This was reported by Yaroslav Zhelezniak, People's Deputy of Ukraine.

The draft law provides for strengthening the role of international experts in the selection of candidates. In particular, in the following cases:

if the Advisory Group of Experts cannot reach a decision due to the same number of votes for and against, a second vote is held;

in the event of an equal number of votes in favour and against during such re-voting, the decisive shall be the votes of three members of the Advisory Group of Experts, of whom at least two are nominated by international organisations or the European Commission for Democracy through Law;

"The enhanced role of international experts in the selection of judges to the Constitutional Court of Ukraine is a definite plus, but the ranked voting for candidates in the Verkhovna Rada at the final stage of the competition may offset it," DEJURE Foundation commented on the adoption of the draft law.

Adopting the draft law on the selection of judges to the CCU was the first recommendation of the European Commission for Ukraine's membership in the EU.
