The US House of Representatives votes to remove Kevin McCarthy from the post of Speaker

The US House of Representatives has supported the resignation of Kevin McCarthy. 216 members voted in favour and 210 against.

CNN reported this.

This is the first time in US history that members of the House of Representatives have voted to dismiss a speaker.

McCarthy had been in office for less than a year. Republican Matt Gaetz filed a motion for the speaker's resignation.

Gaetz is known for his support of former US President Donald Trump. In particular, the Republican supported Trump's candidacy for the 2024 presidential election.

Kevin McCarthy was accused of a "secret deal" with President Joe Biden.

The US president allegedly agreed to sign a temporary bill to avoid a shutdown without including Ukraine in the aid package, and McCarthy promised to approve the aid package later.

During a press conference on Tuesday, McCarthy said that he had not made a deal with the White House to help Ukraine.

"Look, I support arming Ukraine. That doesn't mean sending them cash but arming Ukraine. But I have been on the White House even before they sent the supplemental, I said, 'You guys are doing it all wrong by just sending this as a supplemental,'" the former speaker said.

At the same time, the Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council in the White House, John Kirby, said that McCarthy's resignation would not affect the approval of a new aid package for Ukraine by Congress.

Congressman Patrick McHenry became the interim speaker of the US House of Representatives, who will preside over the voting and election of the next speaker of the House.
