The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) suspended the Russian Union of Journalists' membership
The International Federation of Journalists immediately suspended the membership of the Union of Journalists of Russia because of its activities after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation — The Washington Post.
The IFJ announced that the Russian union's membership had been suspended after an investigation and then a vote by the global executive committee on February 22.
This vote came after the union refused to reconsider its decision to establish branches in four regions of Ukraine temporarily occupied by Russia.
These are the temporarily occupied territories of the Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.
"The actions of the Union of Journalists of Russia to establish four branches in the occupied Ukrainian territories violated solidarity and sowed divisions between sister unions," said IFJ President Dominique Pradalié.
The International Federation of Journalists will also continue to support independent journalists in Russia and abroad, as well as provide assistance to its Ukrainian affiliates.
