On August 23, the Indian spacecraft Chandrayaan-3 landed on the South Pole of the Moon.
This was announced during a live broadcast by the Indian Space Agency (ISRO).
Thus, India became the first country to have landed a satellite near the south pole and the fourth country to have landed on the Moon.
Many believed that India was competing with Russia for the first "soft landing" near the pole, but on August 19, the Russian Luna-25 crashed into the moon after a failed orbital manoeuvre.
On August 21, ISRO published the first images of the Moon's backside taken by the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft.
