The Guardian names Pamfir as one of the best films of the year
Dmytro Sukholytkyi-Sobchuk's film took 37th place in the British publication's ranking.
The film tells the story of a man nicknamed Pamfir, who used to be a smuggler in a border village in Bukovyna. Now he is an excellent family man who returned home from a job in Poland. However, life made Pamfir turn to smuggling again. The film is immersed in the regional context, traditions, and customs: from smuggling to the Malanka holiday.
"This movie from western Ukraine is one of the strangest and fiercest I have seen in a while: dynamic and yet despairing. It does not allude to Russia’s war on Ukraine, but perhaps that conflict is there subtextually, in the sense of tribal loyalty, community tradition and the distinct, almost occult pull towards the west," says The Guardian's review of the film.
The movie will be available on Netflix starting June 22.
