Scholz rejects Erdoğan's demand that Sweden’s NATO accession be linked to Turkey’s EU membership
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called on Turkish President Recep Erdoğan not to link Sweden's accession to NATO and Turkey's European integration.
This was reported by Tagesspiegel.
"I don't think this should be understood as a coherent theme," Scholz said in response to Erdoğan's statement.
The German Chancellor also notes that Sweden has fulfilled all the requirements for joining NATO.
"I hope that Sweden will soon become a NATO member," he added.
As a reminder, Turkish President Recep Erdoğan said that before Turkey allowed Sweden to join NATO, the European Union should provide the country with a path to join the bloc.
