Russia launched a missile attack on Sumy during the night of August 17
On the night of August 17, 2024, Russian troops launched an Iskander-K cruise missile at the city of Sumy and 14 Shahed combat drones. The Air Defence Forces reported downing 14 attack drones in the Mykolaiv, Cherkasy, Poltava, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia and Kyiv regions.
In the Sumy region, bordering Russia to the north, the Russians launched a missile attack on Sumy. The regional police reported at least two civilians injured. Rescue and search operations are ongoing. Ten cars, two apartment buildings, and a shopping centre were damaged. The Russian army shelled a total of 34 settlements in the region. Four civilians were injured. Thirty-five private houses, 5 of which are multi-apartment buildings, six private cars, a clubhouse, a church and a lock-up were damaged.
In the Kharkiv region, bordering Russia in the east of Ukraine, the Russians shelled Borova, Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi, Kozacha Lopan, Odnorobivka, Malodanylove, and Novoosynove. One civilian was killed in Kozacha Lopan. Private houses, outbuildings and garages were damaged throughout the area.
In the Donetsk region, located on the frontline in the east of Ukraine and partially occupied since 2014, the Russian army launched 2,382 attacks on Hirnyk, Kurakhove, Myrnohrad, Siversk, Toretsk, Chasiv Yar, Andriivka, Malynivka, and Markove. Two civilians were killed. 15 residential buildings, a shop, agricultural machinery and vehicles, and communications were damaged.
In the Luhansk region, almost completely occupied by Russia, the Russians shelled Nevske and Makiivka with artillery and combat drones. The Regional Military Administration reports no casualties.
In the Dnipropetrovsk region, south-central Ukraine, the Russians launched a missile attack on the Dniprovskyi district. Air defence forces downed two missiles, and the wreckage caused fires. The Regional Military Administration reports no casualties. The Russian army shelled Nikopol, Pokrovsk, Myrove, and Marhanets communities. Infrastructure, 5 private houses, 2 outbuildings, and a car were damaged. The Regional Military Administration reports no casualties.
In the Zaporizhzhia region, partially occupied in the south since 2022, Russians launched 401 attacks on Tavriiske, Rivne, Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka, Malyshivka, Bilenke, Novokaterynivka, and Poltavka. 15 private houses were destroyed. The Regional Military Administration reports no casualties.
In the Mykolaiv region, south of Ukraine, Russians shelled Kutsurub and Ochakiv communities. Three police officers sustained injuries. A police car was damaged.
In the Kherson region, south of Ukraine, partially occupied since 2022, the Russian army shelled Sadove, Prydniprovske, Komyshany, Antonivka, Inhulets, Stanislav, Romashkove, Poniativka, Veleletenske, Sofiivka, Inzhenerne, Kizomys, Tomyna Balka, Pervomaiske, Beryslav, Novovorontsovka, Zolota Balka, Zamozhne, Odradokamianka, Novokairy, Zmiivka and Kherson. Six civilians were injured, including a child. A multi-storey building and 22 private houses, a gas pipeline, private cars and a rescue vehicle were damaged.
In the Chernihiv region, bordering Belarus and Russia to the north, the Russians fired mortars and FPV combat drones at Semenivka and Snovske communities. The Regional Military Administration reports no casualties.
