Romanian President Klaus Iohannis to run for NATO Secretary General

Bucharest, Romania (Svidomi) —Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has announced that he will run for the post of NATO Secretary General. The new NATO Secretary General is to be elected by October 2024.
"We are now in a security context in which, in my opinion, it is time for our country to assume even greater responsibility within the Euro-Atlantic leadership," Iohannis said.
According to the Romanian President, NATO needs a renewed look at its mission. Eastern Europe has to contribute value to the discussions and decisions taken within the Alliance.
Iohannis says that with balanced, strong and influential representation from the region, NATO will be able to make the best decisions. All of this influenced his decision to run for the post of NATO Secretary General.
