Polish special services are investigating the origin of the infectious Legionnaires' disease in Podkarpackie Voivodeship

Over 100 people in Rzeszów, Poland, have already contracted the disease. The Internal Security Agency is taking "routine actions" in response to this.

Deputy Minister for the Coordination of Special Services Stanisław Żaryn stated this.

The disease is caused by the Legionella bacterium. Its spread was first recorded in 1976 at a conference of the American Legion veteran organisation.

This bacterium causes cough, fever, and muscle pain in humans. The disease is treated with antibiotics and has a mortality rate of about 5-10%.

In 2019, a case of the disease was recorded in Ukraine.

The disease began to spread in Rzeszów, Poland. As of August 25, at least 113 people have fallen ill, seven have died, and one person has been cured.

Poland's Internal Security Agency wants to make sure that the bacterium is not being spread deliberately. Żaryn also noted that Russia is trying to create panic over the disease. This further motivates the ISA to investigate the issue.
