Chișinău, Moldova (Svidomi) — Moldova says that the self-proclaimed "Transnistria" (unrecognised republic) will hold a so-called "congress of deputies of all levels" on February 28. They may ask Putin to annex the "TMR" to Russia.

Moldova Liberă writes, citing "Transnistrian politician" Gennady Chorba, that such an event as a "congress of deputies" is convened to make important decisions.

The purpose of the congress has not been announced. Chorba suggests that "on behalf of the citizens of Transnistria", they will ask to "annex" the region to Russia.

On February 29, Russian President Putin was scheduled to address the Federal Assembly. In it, he is supposed to announce the request of "Transnistrians to join Russia", and the Federal Assembly will decide to grant it.

Gennady Chorba claims that the decree to hold such an event came from Moscow.

Moldova's Bureau of Reintegration Policy said it is closely monitoring the situation in Transnistria. It claims that Chișinău has no reason to believe that the situation in the region could deteriorate.

Transnistria is an administrative unit within Moldova that has the status of autonomy. In 1990, this territory declared sovereignty, leading to an armed conflict between Moldova and the breakaway republic. In 1992, the fighting ended. Subsequently, a contingent of "Russian peacekeeping forces" was deployed to the region.

The situation in the region has not yet been resolved. In 2022, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe unanimously recognised Transnistria as a Russian-occupied territory.
