IOC temporarily suspends Russian Olympic Committee for including sports organisations from temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine as its members
The International Olympic Committee has temporarily suspended the Russian Olympic Committee for including sports organisations from temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine as its members.
The IOC reports in its statement.
In the beginning of October, the Russian Olympic Committee included the so-called "regional Olympic committees" of the "DPR", "LPR" and the temporarily occupied Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.
The reason for this decision was explained by the IOC as a violation of the Olympic Charter by the ROC in the context of Ukraine's territorial integrity.
The IOC decided to suspend the ROC indefinitely, until further notice. The possible consequences of this decision are as follows:
- The ROC will not be able to perform the functions of a National Olympic Committee and receive funding from the Olympic Movement;
The IOC reserves the right to decide about the participation of individual neutral athletes with a Russian passport in the Olympic Games Paris 2024 and the Olympic
Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 at the appropriate time. In accordance with the recommendations of the organisation of March 28, 2023.
At the same time, the IOC has not yet made a final decision on the future of athletes from Russia and Belarus at the Olympic Games in Paris.
It will be recalled that on March 28, the head of the IOC, Thomas Bach, supported the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions under neutral status.
