Germany opposes depriving Russia of veto power in UN Security Council

The German Foreign Ministry rejects Zelenskyy's proposals to reform the UN.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said this on German public television.

Among other things, the President of Ukraine proposed to eliminate Russia’s veto on the UN Security Council.

"We do not endorse this idea, and I have consistently conveyed this to my Ukrainian counterparts," said German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

Regarding the proposal to give Germany a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, Baerbock noted that reforms were part of a "broader process" and that this "will not materialize overnight".

"In this situation, you can't say, 'OK, we'll just change the Security Council'. It would be a bit naïve," the minister added.

It will be recalled that on September 21, Zelenskyy addressed a meeting of the UN Security Council. There, he proposed to deprive Russia of its veto power and expand the permanent representation of countries in the Council. The Ukrainian president mentioned the African Union, Asia, Germany, Latin America, and the Pacific Rim countries as examples.
