Former Prime Minister Robert Fico's populist party Smer wins parliamentary elections in Slovakia
Former Prime Minister Robert Fico's populist party, Smer, wins the parliamentary elections in Slovakia, receiving more votes than the current president's Progressive Slovakia party.
The Slovak Spectator reported this.
With 99% of the votes counted, the Smer party received more than 23% of the vote. The pro-European party "Progressive Slovakia" of Zuzana Čaputová and Michal Šimečka came in second with 17% of the vote. The third place went to Peter Pellegrini's Voice party with 15%.
Progressive Slovakia received the most votes in Bratislava, while Smer won in small towns and villages in Slovakia.
Therefore, the Smer party will now be offered to form the government.
Fico is a Eurosceptic. He promised to stop providing military aid to Ukraine and criticises the sanctions against Russia. He also supports peace talks with Russia.
