Finnish court leaves militant Yan Petrovsky in custody to enable his extradition to Ukraine

On August 25, the Itä-Uusimaa District Court extended the arrest of militant Yan Petrovsky. Finnish law enforcement officials asked the court for this decision in order to conduct an extradition investigation and extradite the Russian militant to Ukraine.

Finnish Broadcasting Company reported this.

It will be recalled that on August 25, the detention of a militant of the illegal military group Rusich, Yan Petrovsky, was reported in Finland.

Since 2004, Yan Petrovsky has lived in Norway. In 2014-2015, he took part in the Russian war against Ukraine. Because of this, in 2016, Norwegian law enforcement deported the militant to Russia. He has been under sanctions since 2022.

In early August 2023, Ukraine received information from the European Police Office about the detention of Petrovsky in Finland by the migration police and his possible deportation to Russia. In view of this, the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine submitted a request to Finland for the arrest of Yan Petrovsky.

Finnish law enforcement used the information provided by Ukraine to detain the militant on August 23. On August 25, the court extended Petrovsky's arrest so that Ukrainian prosecutors could prepare the materials necessary for Petrovsky's extradition.
