Europol participates in joint investigation team into alleged core international crimes in Ukraine

Europol has joined a joint investigation team (JIT) to investigate serious international crimes committed in Ukraine.

This is stated on the Europol website.

The Prosecutors General of the seven countries involved and Ms Catherine De Bolle, Executive Director of Europol, signed the agreement during the 17th Meeting of the Consultative Forum of Prosecutors General at Eurojust.

Europol will provide analytical and forensic support to the JIT members. The organisation will support the collection and analysis of data legally obtained from open sources.

Europol will also provide its expertise in war crimes, crimes against humanity and other international crimes.

Eurojust provides legal, logistical, financial and analytical support to the JIT.

The JIT was established on March 25, 2022, by Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine with the support of Eurojust. On May 31, 2022, Estonia, Latvia and Slovakia became members, followed by Romania on October 13, 2022.

On March 3, 2023, seven national JIT authorities signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the US Department of Justice. Europol joins Eurojust and the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) as members of the JIT.
