EU Council extends temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees until March 2025
EU countries have agreed to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 2025.
This was reported by the Council of the European Union.
"The EU will support the Ukrainian people for as long as it takes. The prolongation of the protection status offers certainty to the more than 4 million refugees who have found a safe haven in the EU," said Fernando Grande-Marlasca, acting Minister of the Interior of Spain.
The Council has yet to decide on the extension of temporary protection formally. This will happen after a legal review and translation into all EU languages.
Temporary protection includes:
- residence;
- access to the labour market and housing;
- medical and social welfare assistance;
- access to education for children.
It will be recalled that the United States has extended the status of temporary protection for Ukrainians in the country until 2025.
