EU agrees on 12th package of sanctions against Russia

The European Council has put forward proposals for the 12th package of sanctions against Russia over its attack on Ukraine.

The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, and the European Commission are proposing to impose sanctions on more than 120 individuals and legal entities for their role in undermining Ukraine's sovereignty. These include representatives of the Russian military, defence and IT sectors, as well as economic operators.

The proposal also includes new export and import bans and measures to tighten the oil price ceiling.

"The proposed measures target those who orchestrated the recent illegal so-called "elections" in the territories of Ukraine that Russia has temporarily occupied, those responsible for the forced "re-education" of Ukrainian children, and actors spreading disinformation and propaganda in support of Russia's war," the statement reads.

Earlier, Radio Liberty's Ukrainian service wrote that the draft document proposed a ban on diamond imports from Russia.

It will be recalled that despite sanctions, Europe imported 13 billion euros worth of precious metals from Russia.
