Australia backs Russia's veto curbs in the UN Security Council

Australia has supported Volodymyr Zelenskyy's demand to deprive Russia of its veto in the UN Security Council and reform the Security Council.

Bloomberg writes about it.

"We must demand more of the permanent members, including constraints on the use of the veto... Russia mocks the UN every day it continues its illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine," Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong said.

In her view, the Security Council should provide more permanent and non-permanent representation for Africa, Latin America and Asia, including permanent seats for India and Japan.

Australia is seeking a seat on the Security Council for 2029-2030.

The UN Security Council is comprised of 15 members, five of which are permanent and have the power of veto: China, Russia, France, the United Kingdom and the United States.

It will be recalled that on September 20, speaking at the Security Council, the President of Ukraine called for the reform of the UN.
