About 20-50 thousand Ukrainians lost one or more limbs during Russia's war against Ukraine
The Wall Street Journal reported this, citing data from prosthetics companies, doctors, and charities.
German prosthetics manufacturer Ottobock estimates the number of people with amputations at around 50,000 based on data from the government and medical partners.
The number of amputees may be much higher.
The problem is the high cost of prosthetics and the time it takes for patients to receive them.
"Patients should get new limbs at the latest 90 days after amputation to avoid atrophy and other problem," Olha Rudnieva, CEO of the Superhumans Rehabilitation Centre, said in a comment to the publication.
Many people, according to Rudnieva, have been waiting for more than a year.
