Hungary says the removal of OTP bank from the list of international war sponsors is not a "material change"
A spokesman for the Hungarian Foreign Ministry said that the removal of OTP Bank from the list of international sponsors of war is not a "material change," and the country will not contribute to further EU funding for arms supplies to Ukraine.
Bloomberg reported this.
In May, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said that Hungary would continue to block financial assistance provided by the European Union to Ukraine and would not support further sanctions against Russia for three reasons:
- Ukraine's inclusion of OTP Bank in the list of international sponsors of terrorism;
- the alleged restriction of the right of ethnic Hungarians to education in their native language in Ukraine;
- The Washington Post publication, according to which Zelenskyy allegedly spoke about the explosions of the Druzhba pipeline, which Hungary uses to receive oil from Russia.
On September 29, the National Agency for Corruption Prevention suspended the status of international sponsors of war for OTP Bank. The NACP hoped this decision would lead to Hungary unblocking €500 million in EU military aid to Ukraine.
