Azerbaijan arrests former "Foreign Minister" of the unrecognised Nagorno-Karabakh Republic

Azerbaijani law enforcement agencies have arrested David Babayan, the former so-called "Foreign Minister" of the unrecognised Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh).

The Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan reported this.

David Babayan was detained on September 29. He was found guilty on a number of charges back in 2020. The charges include launching and waging an aggressive war, financing mercenaries and violations of international humanitarian law during an armed conflict, inciting ethnic hatred, etc. Babayan was then put on the international wanted list.

Back on September 28, Babayan wrote on Facebook saying he had decided to voluntarily surrender to Azerbaijan and would go to Baku "for an appropriate investigation."

"My failure to appear, or worse, my escape, will cause serious harm to our long-suffering nation, to many people, and I, as an honest person, hard worker, patriot, and Christian, cannot allow this," he wrote.

It will be recalled that on April 28, Azerbaijani border guards detained the former head of the so-called "government" of Nagorno-Karabakh, Ruben Vardanyan. The so-called Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) will cease to exist on January 1, 2024.
