Ukrainian film 20 Days in Mariupol is nominated for Oscar as Best Documentary Feature Film

California, United States (Svidomi) — The Ukrainian film 20 Days in Mariupol by Mstyslav Chernov has been shortlisted for the Oscar for Best Documentary, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

A total of 167 films were eligible for the nomination. The Academy voted for 15 of them to be included in the shortlist.

The award ceremony will take place on March 11 in Hollywood.

Mstyslav Chernov, as part of the Associated Press team, together with photographer Yevhen Malolietka and producer and journalist Vasylisa Stepanenko, was in the besieged city of Mariupol, Donetsk region.

They were the last international journalists to stay in the city and record Russian war crimes. Among other things, the film shows the bombing of the Mariupol maternity hospital on March 9, 2022.

The team won the Pulitzer Prize, the most prestigious award in journalism, for their work during the siege of Mariupol. Chernov and Malolietka won the George Gongadze Prize and the Ukrainska Pravda Prize in Ukraine.

"This is a memorial to those who did not survive in Mariupol." Mstyslav Chernov said in the interview with Svidomi.
