Ukraine joined the IAEA Board of Governors for 2023-2025
Ukraine has become a member of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for 2023-2025.
This was announced by the President of Ukraine on social media.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked all the countries that supported this decision.
"We must all work together, all of us in the world who value security, to put an end to all types of nuclear blackmail that Russia attempts to normalize. Nuclear safety and security must be guaranteed," the President of Ukraine wrote.
Zelenskyy said that Ukraine would make every effort to strengthen the important role of the IAEA and strengthen nuclear safety in the world.
Eleven countries were elected to the Board of Governors for 2023-2025: Algeria, Armenia, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Ecuador, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, Paraguay, Spain, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
The Board of Governors is one of the two governing bodies of the IAEA, along with the annual General Conference of the organisation's member states.
This body reviews the IAEA's financial statements, programme and budget, approves safeguards agreements and publishes safety standards.
In February 2023, Ukraine nominated its candidacy for the IAEA Board of Governors for 2023-2025.
