Russian presidential elections to be held on March 17, 2024

The upper house of the Russian parliament, the Federation Council, has set the date for the presidential election in the country for March 17, 2024.

The Russian propaganda media outlet RIA Novosti reports.

Prior to that, the Russian service of Deutsche Welle reported that five candidates had already announced their intention to run in the presidential election in Russia:

Igar Girkin, the former leader of the illegal armed group "DPR", who is currently in a pre-trial detention centre in Russia for allegedly calling for extremism;

Katierina Duntsova, a journalist from Rzhev, Tver region;

Baris Nadezhdin, a member of the city council of Dolgoprudny, Moscow Region, and a State Duma deputy.

Before that, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Putin would be re-elected in the 2024 presidential election with more than 90% support.

In October, the PACE unanimously adopted a resolution recognising Putin's leadership as illegitimate. The resolution calls on all countries to recognise Putin's presidency as illegitimate after his current term ends in March 2024.

Previously, Svidomi discussed what the PACE's decision not to recognise Vladimir Putin as Russia's legitimate president means for Ukraine.
