Russia takes over the presidency of the UN Security Council from April 1

Russia will hold this position for a month, after which the presidency will be transferred to Switzerland — the United Nations website.

This status is held by all members of the Security Council in turn. It is passed on in alphabetical order.

According to the Provisional Rules of Procedure, the President of the Security Council:

  • convenes meetings at the request of any member of the Security Council
  • approves the agenda set by the members
  • give the right to speak to members who wish to do so
  • determines the order of placement of resolutions to be voted on by the members of the Security Council.

"From April 1, the absurdity will reach a new level," said Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN, Serhii Kysylytsia.

Instead, former head of the Security Council Secretariat (2009-2016) Oleksandr Matsuka believes that Russia will have no influence on the agenda and will be forced to listen to the positions of other Council members.
