Poland says NATO considers shooting down Russian missiles approaching its borders

Warsaw, Poland (Svidomi) — Poland's Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Szejna says NATO is considering the option of shooting down Russian missiles if they stray too close to its borders, Polish media outlet RMF24 reports

"But this would have to be done with the consent of the Ukrainian side and taking into account international consequences. Then NATO missiles would hit Russian missiles outside the territory of the Treaty (Alliance — ed.),"

said Szejna.

He adds that Poland takes Putin's threats very seriously. Szejna reminded of the NATO summit to be held in July 2024.

On the night of March 24, a Russian missile once again violated Polish airspace. It stayed on the territory for at least 39 seconds. It was one of the cruise missiles fired by the Russians to attack Ukrainian cities in the west of the country.

The spokesperson for the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces, Jacek Goryszewski, said that there was no order to shoot down the missile.

It will be recalled that on December 29, during the attack on Ukrainian cities, a Russian missile had already crossed the Polish border. The missile flew 40 kilometres into Polish territory. Three minutes later, the missile returned to Ukraine.

Since then, Poland has deployed F-16 fighter jets during Russia's massive attacks on Ukraine.

In addition, the wreckage of Russian drones has been repeatedly found on the territory of Moldova near the border with Ukraine. The wreckage was spotted after Russia's attacks on the Odesa region, south of Ukraine.
