PACE Committee recognises Russia as a dictatorship

The Parliament of the Assembly of the Council of Europe has labelled Russia a dictatorship.

This is stated in a joint statement of parliamentarians published on the PACE website.

The prolonged power of the president, combined with the lack of a strong parliament, an independent judiciary, and an active civil society, has turned Russia into a de facto dictatorship.

By unanimously approving the draft resolution, the parliamentarians recalled the conclusions of the Council of Europe's Venice Commission that "term limit waiver for the incumbent President violates both the Russian constitution and international legal principles."

"The Russian aggression against Ukraine and its aftermath demonstrate that dictatorships "constitute a threat to the international peace and security and to the territorial integrity and political independence of their neighbours," the Committee said.

It will be recalled that in October 2022, the PACE recognised the Russian regime as a terrorist regime, and in April 2023, the deportation of Ukrainian children and adults to Russia was recognised as genocide.
