Oil refinery in Volgograd, Russia, catches fire after drone attack

Volgograd, Russia (Svidomi) — A fire has broken out at a Lukoil oil refinery in the Russian city of Volgograd following a drone attack, says the governor of the Volgograd region, Andrei Bocharov.

According to the Emergency Situations Ministry of the Volgograd region, the fire broke out over an area of 300 square metres.

"The fire was quickly contained and the open fire extinguished. There are no casualties," said the head of the Volgograd region, Andrei Bocharov.

Residents of the Russian city of Volgograd, more than 400km from the Ukrainian border, say they heard at least two explosions overnight. A video of the drone strike on the plant is also appearing on social media.

The footage shows that the explosion occurred at 04:49 local time.

Russia's defence ministry announced another attack by Ukrainian drones. Russian air defences allegedly destroyed four UAVs over the Belgorod region, two over the Volgograd region and one over the Rostov region.

The Ukrainian side has made no official comment on the events.

It will be recalled that on January 31, a drone allegedly struck an oil refinery in St Petersburg, Russia, and on January 29, in the city of Yaroslavl, 700 km from the Russian border.
