Nikki Haley defeats Trump in D.C. primary
District of Columbia, USA (Svidomi) — Nikki Haley defeated former President Trump for the first time during the Republican Party primary in the District of Columbia. Trump had won the previous primaries in Michigan, South Carolina and New Hampshire.
Almost 63% of Republicans voted for Haley, while 33% voted for Trump. Haley received twice as many votes as Trump: 1,274 (63%) against 676 (33%) in all electoral districts.
As a result of the vote, Haley will receive the votes of all 19 electors from the District of Columbia.
Her victory on Sunday at least temporarily halts Donald Trump's victory in the Republican Party election. Nikki Haley promises to stay in the race until Super Tuesday, March 5, when 15 states and territories will hold primaries. The Republicans will decide the fate of 874 electors at once.
According to preliminary forecasts, the main competitors in the 2024 presidential election, as in 2020, will be Joe Biden and Donald Trump. However, on March 4, the US Supreme Court will issue one of its opinions on the legality of former President Donald Trump's participation in the 2024 elections under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. This concerns the former US president's role in the events of January 6, 2021, when the Capitol was stormed.
The Supreme Court case is one of dozens being considered across the country to prevent Trump from running in the election due to the events of 6 January 2021, The Hill says.
