Lithuanian President strips figure skater Drobiazko of citizenship over pro-Russian stance
On September 15, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda signed a decree to deprive figure skater M. Drobiazko of Lithuanian citizenship because of her support for the Putin regime.
This was reported by the Lithuanian media outlet BNS.
The figure skater herself said that she was not involved in Russian propaganda but was spreading "the light of culture and goodness".
The Citizenship Commission recommended that Drobiazko be deprived of Lithuanian citizenship because she publicly expressed support for the Putin regime and kept performing in Russia.
30 years ago, the Russian athlete was granted Lithuanian citizenship on an exceptional basis for her services to Lithuanian sport and promotion of the country's name.
Prior to this, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland jointly called for the exclusion of athletes with Russian and Belarusian citizenship from international sporting events.
