A delegation of the Economic Community of West African States has arrived in Niger for talks with the military officers who seized power.

This is reported by AFP.

The plane with the delegation landed in the Nigerien capital Niamey.

"The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has agreed to activate a 'standby force' as a last resort to restore democracy in Niger," the newspaper says.

The day before, the West African bloc agreed on the day of possible military intervention in Niger if diplomatic efforts fail.

"We are ready to go any time the order is given," said Abdel-Fatau Musah, an ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs and security, Al Jazeera reports.

On July 26, a group of soldiers led by Presidential Guard Commander Omar Tchiani removed Niger's democratically elected President, Mohamed Bazoum, from power.

It will be recalled that on August 11, demonstrations in support of the military junta took place in the Nigerien capital Niamey. The participants wore Wagner PMC symbols and Russian flags.
