Western governments are worried that TikTok may "steal" civil servants' data and transfer it to China
The Civil Network OPORA notes that the European Commission, the governments of Canada and the United States prohibit their civil servants from using this social network on corporate and private devices due to the cybersecurity threat.
In February 2023, the European Commission ordered employees to delete TikTok from their phones and corporate devices.
After Europe, the Canadian government announced a ban on the social network on employees' phones.
"I suspect that when the government takes the important step of telling all federal employees that they can no longer use TikTok on their work phones, many Canadians, from business people to individuals, are thinking about the security of their data," said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
"The Western world is blocking the platform not only because of fears of data leakage into the hands of Chinese intelligence agencies but also because of the threat of Beijing using the platform for propaganda," explains Olha Bedovska, social media monitoring specialist at OPORA.
