US House of Representatives votes to impeach Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas
Washington, USA (Svidomi) — The US House of Representatives has voted to impeach Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas over the situation on the country's southern border. Such a measure was taken for the second time in the country's history.
Two hundred fourteen congressmen voted in favour of the impeachment, while 213 voted against it. Representatives of the Republican Party have an advantage in the House of Representatives.
The impeachment was announced against the backdrop of the migration crisis and the Republican Party's attempts to hold President Joe Biden and his representatives accountable for immigration and border security policies.
The Republicans believe that Alejandro Mayorkas has committed serious misconduct in managing the security of the US southern border.
CNN writes, citing lawyers, that there was not enough evidence to impeach Mayorkas.
The Department of Homeland Security said that House Republicans "will be remembered by history for trampling on the Constitution."
"House Republicans will be remembered by history for trampling on the Constitution for political gain rather than working to solve the serious challenges at our border," a DHS spokesperson said.
Mayorkas and the Ministry of Internal Security will continue to work.
The situation on the southern border of the United States was described in Svidomi's explainer.
