Ursula von der Leyen: Ukraine has almost fully implemented recommendations on its way to EU membership

The President of the European Commission has said that Ukraine has almost fully implemented the European Commission's recommendations on transformations on its way to EU membership.

She said this during a plenary session of the European Parliament on the eve of the European Council meeting on 14-15 December.

"Our enlargement report from last month shows clear progress on all steps that we have identified, over 90 per cent of these reforms had been completed by that time. We identified four reforms to fully complete back then. [Since the report] Ukraine has continued to work on all of them," said the President of the European Commission.

Ursula von der Leyen noted two anti-corruption laws on increasing the number of NABU staff and asset declarations, as well as amendments to the legislation on national minorities in line with the recommendations of the Venice Commission.

"This law will allow greater use of minority languages in schools, in books and in public events. Actually, national minority groups have already reacted positively to this law. And our initial assessment is also positive," the politician said.

It will be recalled that on December 14-15, the European Council will consider the issue of starting negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.

If the decision is approved, the deputies will proceed to develop a "negotiating framework" for Ukraine, which will determine the next steps on the path to EU membership.

On November 8, the European Commission recommended starting negotiations on Ukraine's and Moldova's accession to the EU.
