The Wagner Group is likely to release the last recruits from mandatory service and offer them contracts
The Wagner PMC is planning to release the last recruits from compulsory service and offer them contracts.
The British Ministry of Defence reported this.
"The Russian Ministry of Defence has taken over Wagner's prisoner recruitment pipeline," the statement reads.
The recruitment scheme peaked in early 2023, with at least 40,000 prisoners serving under it.
According to intelligence reports, reinforcements from Russian prisons allowed Russia to capture Bakhmut, "one of its few recent claims to success."
Within a few months, up to 20,000 convicts were killed in action.
Earlier, it was reported that the Wagner PMC had released formerly recruited prisoners to their homes. They are now allegedly staying in hotels in Anapa, Russia.
