The oil slick that leaked out of the engine room of the Kakhovka HPP affected about 10 square kilometres
A 150-tonne oil slick that leaked from the engine room of the Kakhovka HPP affected about 10 square kilometres of the Kakhovka reservoir and the right bank of the Dnipro River.
"We have surveyed the entire water area of the Black Sea, the Dnipro River, its tributaries and the Kakhovka Reservoir. Our experts did everything to find out where the oil went. After the water began to recede, we found that the oil covered approximately 10 km² in the floodplains of the Kakhovka reservoir and the right bank of Kherson," said the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Ihor Klymenko.
Experts are working to eliminate the oily layer, which is moving towards the Black Sea. On June 14, 240 square metres of the oil slick were cleared.
Ihor Klymenko discussed the consequences of the Russian explosion of the Kakhovka HPP with the US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, and told her about the oil leakage.
Additional equipment, reagents and specialists are needed to eliminate the consequences.
Brink said that official Washington would make every effort to ensure that Ukraine could quickly overcome these consequences.
To recap, on 6 June, Russians blew up the Kakhovka HPP. On the same day, members of the National Security and Defence Council were informed that at least 150 tonnes of machine oil had leaked into the Dnipro River, and there was a risk of further leakage of more than 300 tonnes.
