The Hungarian president Katalin Novák resigns
Budapest, Hungary (Svidomi) — The Hungarian president Katalin Novák resigned. On that day, society was outraged by her decision to pardon the man convicted of a paedophilia case.
“I made a mistake. The pardon decision and the lack of justification could raise doubts. There is no doubt here and there cannot be. I would never forgive those who treated children so cruelly. Protecting the children is our joint duty,” she said.
Novák apologised to everyone she offended by this act. She made a statement last time as the president.
In April, Katalin Novák granted a presidential pardon to the man convicted of a paedophilia case. It became known the other day.
This man is a former deputy director who helped his boss cover up a pedophilia incident. This principle abused several underage boys in an orphanage in Bicske. His deputy tried to pressure the children to recant their testimony. For this, the deputy director was sentenced to three years and four months.
Novák’s decision outraged society, and her advisers resigned.
As Hungary is a parliamentary republic, the parliament must now elect a new president within 30 days of the termination of Katalin Novák’s mandate.
