The father of the late Mahsa Amini, whose death sparked mass protests in Iran, was detained on the anniversary of his daughter's death

The father of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, whose death in custody a year ago sparked widespread demonstrations against the current regime, was briefly detained in Iran.

This was reported by RFE/RL's Iranian Service.

Amjad Amini was detained near his home and released after interrogation, forbidding him and his family to leave the house during the day. The house was surrounded by Iranian security forces.

In the weeks leading up to the anniversary of Amina's death, local police conducted "raids". They encouraged the girl's family to refrain from holding events for part of the anniversary of her death.

It will be recalled that 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in Iran after the "morality police" Gasht-e Ershad arrested her for allegedly "wearing a head covering too openly".

Later, it became known that the authorities planned to disband the 'morality police', but on July 16, they resumed street patrols. The so-called 'morality police' also controls how women wear the hijab.
