Swedish parliament votes in favour of the country's accession to NATO
The Swedish Riksdag has voted in favour of the country's accession to the North Atlantic Alliance — the Swedish national broadcaster SVT.
Two hundred sixty-nine deputies supported the decision. Thirty-seven voted against it.
"By this decision, Sweden approves accession to the North Atlantic Treaty and several legislative changes that come into force from the date of the government's decision," the statement said.
Among other things, it is proposed that in the event of war or a threat of war, the government has the opportunity to independently, without a parliamentary decision, seek military support from NATO.
Sweden will finally become a NATO member when all NATO member states ratify the accession protocol.
