Sweden suspends investigation into explosions on Nord Stream gas pipelines

Stockholm, Sweden (Svidomi) — Sweden's prosecutor's office is suspending further investigation into the explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipelines, the office's press service reports

The Swedish Security Service took over the investigation, and since then, Assistant Prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist has been in charge of the preliminary investigation.

"The main purpose of the preliminary investigation is to find out whether Swedish citizens were involved in the crime and whether Swedish territory was used to commit it, which could have harmed Swedish interests or Swedish security," the statement said.

The prosecutor's office concluded that the authorities "have a complete picture of the events". There is no Swedish jurisdiction for further investigation.

"The preliminary investigation was systematic and thorough. We analysed, among other things, a large number of ship movements to understand what happened. In addition, a thorough examination of the crime scene and several hearings were held," the agency added.

At the same time, Denmark and Germany are conducting separate investigations. Earlier, a joint investigation by the three countries showed that the gas pipelines had been blown up, but they did not find the perpetrators.

It will be recalled that on the night of September 26, 2022, unknown persons blew up three of the four pipes of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines.

In August 2023, the German media outlets ZDF and Der Spiegel published an investigation in which they cited intelligence services as saying that people "associated with Ukraine" could be involved in the explosions.

Ukraine denied any involvement.
