Russia launches massive drone and missile strikes on regions of Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv and Kharkiv, 30 km from Russia

Ukrainian air defence shot down 35 out of 35 Iranian Shaheds. The Russian army attacked Kyiv, the capital, and Kharkiv, 30 km from the Russian border, with Kinzhal and other types of missiles.

Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine: Russians launched missile attacks on the city. Civilian infrastructure and residential buildings were damaged in the Holosiivskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Podilskyi, Desnianskyi, Darnytskyi, Obolonskyi and Pecherskyi districts of the capital. At least 27 people were reported injured in a fire in a multi-storey building in the Solomianskyi district of the capital. One woman died in an ambulance. More than 100 residents were evacuated from the building. The shelling caused interruptions in electricity and water supply in the city.

Kharkiv, 30 km from the border with Russia: Russians launched a missile attack on the central part of the city. At least 41 people were reported injured, one person was killed. Residential buildings, outbuildings, civilian infrastructure and cars were damaged. Services continue to inspect the sites of the strikes. In addition, Russians attacked about 20 settlements in the Kharkiv region with artillery and mortars.

Luhansk region, partially occupied since 2014: the Russian army attacked Nevske and Bilohorivka with mortars and artillery.

Donetsk region, partially occupied since 2014: on January 1, three people died in Avdiivka, Ocheretyne and Pivdenne as a result of Russian shelling. Three more people were injured in the region.

Dnipropetrovsk region: Ukrainian air defence destroyed six shaheds in the Dniprovskyi, Synelnykivskyi, Nikopolskyi and Novomoskovskyi districts. Drone debris damaged a power line. Russians attacked Nikopol with heavy artillery.

Zaporizhzhia region, partially occupied since February 2022: Russians attacked Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Robotyne and other frontline towns and villages with 27 drones. Residential buildings were damaged. There were no casualties.

Kherson region, bordering on the temporarily occupied Crimea: Russian troops made 87 attacks, firing 466 shells from various types of weapons. The Russians hit residential quarters and a critical infrastructure facility. Damage was recorded in Kherson, Antonivka, Sadove and Komyshany. One person was killed and four others were injured.

Mykolaiv region, in southern Ukraine: Ukrainian air defence destroyed three Russian UAVs. The wreckage of the downed drones fell in Mykolaiv and caused a fire. Russians attacked the Ochakiv and Kutsurub communities with artillery. There were no casualties.

Chernihiv region, bordering Russia and Belarus: the Russian army attacked the border of the Chernihiv region with a drone and various types of artillery. Explosions were heard in the Semenivka and Horodnia communities.

Sumy region, bordering Russia in the north of Ukraine: the Russian military shelled the border settlements of the Bilopillia, Yunakivka, Khotin and Esman communities seven times. 51 explosions were recorded.
