Russia attacks Ukraine with drones and missiles. There are dead and wounded
On the night of March 23, 2024, Russians attacked Ukraine with four missiles and 34 attack UAVs. Ukrainian air defence destroyed 31 Russian 'shaheds' in the Poltava, Mykolaiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions.
In the Poltava region, the Ukrainian Air Force destroyed nine Russian drones. There were no casualties or damage to infrastructure.
In the Kharkiv region, bordering Russia to the east, Russians shelled over 15 settlements. A 19-year-old man was injured in Kharkiv as a result of a UAV attack. The State Emergency Service also reports that a police officer and a firefighter were injured when they arrived at the scene of the attack in Kharkiv and came under another attack. Residential buildings were damaged. The city still deals with the aftermath of the March 22 strike. Some parts of the city and the region are still left without electricity.
In the frontline Donetsk region, east of Ukraine, Russians shelled Pokrovsk, Kramatorsk and Bakhmut districts. In Ocheretyne, one person was killed and two others were wounded. Four people were injured in rocket attacks on Myrnohrad, residential buildings were damaged.
During the day, Russians launched 299 attacks on 12 settlements in the frontline Zaporizhzhia region, partially occupied since 2022. The Russian army used missiles, aircraft, and artillery. There have been 325 reports of the destruction of residential buildings and infrastructure.
In the Dnipropetrovsk region, on the night of March 23, Russian troops shelled Nikopol district, which borders the occupied part of the Zaporizhzhia region across the Dnipro. That caused damage to an energy facility and residential buildings. During the night, Ukrainian air defence forces shot down five Russian 'shaheds' in the Nikopol, Synelnykivka and Kryvyi Rih districts. Power was restored to the communities that were cut off from electricity due to the March 22 shelling.
In the de-occupied part of the Kherson region, south of Ukraine, Russians shelled Novoberyslav, Beryslav, Dudchany, Havrylivka, Chervonyi Maiak, Oleksandrivka, Zmiivka, Mykilske, Tiahynka, Lvove Kozatske, Poniativka, Dniprovske, Kizomys, Velеtenske, Stanislav, Sadove, Novovorontsovka, Shliakhove and the city of Kherson. Residential buildings were damaged. One person was killed and three others were injured.
In the Mykolaiv region, Ukraine's south, Ukrainian air defence destroyed one Russian attack UAV. The Russians fired artillery at the waters of the Ochakivka and Kutsurub communities. There were no casualties.
In the Novhorod-Siverskyi district of the Chernihiv region, bordering Belarus and Russia in the north, a Russian drone attacked a minibus. As a result, three people were injured and taken to hospital. In total, Russians fired at the Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Snovske and Horodnianka communities with drones, cannon artillery and mortars. Ukrainian border guards recorded at least 50 explosions. In Semenivka, a cultural centre was destroyed and two civilians were wounded.
During the day, Russians fired 65 times at the Sumy region, bordering Russia in the north. Ukrainian border guards recorded over 300 explosions in 12 communities in the region. One person was injured in the Bilopillia community.
