Polish farmers resume blocking Medyka-Shehyni checkpoint
Polish farmers have resumed blocking the Medyka-Shehyni border crossing. At the end of December, they agreed to unblock the Medyka-Shehyni checkpoint on the Polish-Ukrainian border after negotiations with the government.
Radio Liberty’s Ukrainian Service reports.
The farmers announce that the protest will last until February 3. They promise to let three trucks per hour through, and cars with humanitarian aid and perishable goods without delay. Cars and buses will move as usual.
They say they will continue to protest until the Polish government signs a guarantee that their demands will be met.
On December 23, Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Poland Michał Kołodziejczak said that Polish farmers had agreed to stop the protest at the Medyka-Shehyni checkpoint. The farmers agreed to unblock the border in exchange for the fulfilment of three demands as soon as possible:
- subsidies for corn purchases;
- maintaining the agricultural tax at the current level;
- liquidity loans.
After the New Year, the Ministry was to hold talks with farmers to work out a joint solution.
